ARM Senegal is involved with a number of church projects in Senegal including support to local churches, prison ministry an orphanage and the Talibé Project supporting local children. A talibé is a boy, usually from Senegal, the Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali or Mauritania, who studies the Quran at a daara (West African equivalent of madrasa). This education is guided by a teacher known as a marabout. In most cases talibés leave their parents to stay in the daara and often live in extreme poverty, forced to beg each day to provide for their marabout. Our church maintains strong links with ARM Senegal providing both funding and personnel on a regular basis to the various projects. Our trainee minister, Wayne Lawther, spent several years with ARM in Senegal working with the talibé and building/founding the Talibé Centre.

When a community lifts itself out of poverty, everything changes. Poverty does more than exhaust, starve, trap and kill people. It destroys their sense of worth, limits their horizons, robs people of the chance to reach their full potential. Tearfund’s call is to follow Jesus where the need is greatest. We long for new life and a new sense of worth for people. We do whatever it takes to end poverty and rebuild poor communities. We work through local churches, because they're Jesus’ body on earth, ready to care for the whole person - and the whole community - inside and out. We partner with Tearfund on global initiatives and emergencies.
