About the church

Front of Station Hill Baptist Church, ChippenhamHistory

The Baptist church in Chippenham was founded in about 1850. Some of the origins are a little unclear, but we know there was a community of Baptist Christians that lived in Chippenham during the first half of the 19th century. At the time of its foundation, there were about 40 Christians meeting to worship God each Sunday.

The number of people belonging to the church grew throughout the remainder of the century until, as the 20th century dawned, there were about 100 members. Since then, the church has grown and shrunk and now has a member list of about 120 people. Of course, church life has changed enormously in that time.

The Church Today

The church building is only significant as it is used to help people experience and submit to the rule of God in their lives. The building gets heavily used during the week as well as at weekends by both church and community groups.

The church exhibits a wide age range, literally from 0 to 90 years. This creates a lively family feel. Without any tertiary education establishments in the town, the church tends to lose its young people when they go to university. So there are not many 20 something adults. All the other decades are well represented in the congregation.

You will, we hope, always receive a warm welcome should you come one Sunday and want to join in our many activities.
