Every charity must have Trustees by law. Churches are no exception. Trustees act as a watchdog to ensure that the church is carrying out its responsibilities properly, managing its finances correctly and fulfilling its stated aims.
There are regular Trustee meetings. At these, a report of the finances of the church is received and any action thought to be necessary communicated to the finance team. The Trustees are also responsible for ensuring that the church adheres to laws, such as the Data Protection Act, carries correct insurances for Public Liability and Professional Indemnity and fulfils its responsibilities regarding health and safety both for those who it employs and for the general public who may use the building.
This important function does not require a great deal of time. The church seeks to encourage one or two people who are not the church's leaders to share this responsibility. This independence is important.
